The office of African American Student Affairs (AASA) at the University of Arizona (UA) aims to improve the retention percentage of African American experience by positively impacting all students’ collegiate experiences. The African American Student Affairs Community Mentoring Project will provide UA African American students a social connection to the Tucson community that can enhance their academic motivation and success.
The primary goal of the African American Student Affairs Community Mentoring Project is to connect UA students with prominent members of the Tucson Black community in meaningful ways. It is AASA’s position that students who are meaningfully connected through relationships to their campus and its surrounding communities will be better able to take advantage of the educational and social opportunities presented by access to collegiate education. AASA hopes to facilitate the processes by which UA’s African American students engage with Tucson’s Back community.
The objectives of the African American Student Affairs Community Mentoring Project are varied and include the following:
1. Help UA African American students identify and interact with members of the Tucson Black community.
2. Assist UA African American students in meeting with community members who share similar career interests and goals
3. Provide UA African American students with opportunities to meet with concerned community members who may provide guidance and advice concerning academic or social issues and concerns.
4. Facilitate meaningful interactions and ongoing relationships between UA African American students and members of the Tucson African American community.
Through the AASA Community Mentoring Project, UA students will have the opportunity to participate in fellowship activities with Tucson community.
Thank You for your interest in participating in the Community Mentoring Project. According to Black Issues in Higher Education, mentoring programs have proven effective in student success.
Our goal is to give both mentor and mentee a "blue print" that will help jump start a student's college career by participating with a campus and Tucson community member for a semester long relationship to foster mutual growth.
Our hope is that both mentee and mentor will communicate at least once per month with two structured gathering sponsered by African American Student Affairs
